DSM and Roquette press ahead with bio-based succinic acid JV revamp.

The Reverdia JV will be dissolved and the partners will transfer the rights related to Biosuccinium technology to Roquette. We have gone well beyond the start-up phase and the Biosuccinium brand will continue to grow under the leadership of our partner Roquette.

Global science-based company Royal DSM and plant-based ingredients specialist Roquette are reframing the relationship of their bio-based succinic acid joint venture. Effective 1 April 2019, the joint venture Reverdia will be dissolved and the partners will transfer the rights and obligations related to Reverdias Biosuccinium plant in Cassano, Italy to Roquette.

Under a non-exclusive license from DSM, Roquette will operate the plant and continue serving customers of Biosuccinium. Customer service, order processing, and marketing and sales will be integrated into Roquettes existing business to ensure a smooth transition.

DSM (@DSM), the original developer of the Biosuccinium (@biosuccinium) technology, will assume the role of exclusive licensor, in line with its business model in this field, the company said in a statement.

The Reverdia joint venture was launched in 2012 and aimed to build a long-term supply of bio-based succinic acid to meet evolving market demands. Bio-based succinic acid is derived from non-fossil feedstock and produced with sustainable production technologies that minimise carbon footprint.

It is a building block that can be used in the manufacture of polymers, resins and many other products. Key applications include footwear, packaging and paints.

In 2012, the joint venture claimed it was the first in the world to have a large-scale facility for the commercial production of bio-based succinic acid.

The Reverdia joint venture has proven Biosuccinium technology to be the most sustainable and competitive bio-succinic acid on the market today, said Atul Thakrar, President of Bio-Based Products and Services at DSM.

He added: We have gone well beyond the start-up phase and the Biosuccinium brand will continue to grow under the leadership of our partner Roquette. This is an example of DSM doing what it does best establishing market-leading technologies and commercialising them.

After the success of the collaboration with DSM through the joint venture, we will integrate the Biosuccinium product line within our global business organisation. Our sales force will continue to support our customers growth, added Bruno Plancke, Vice President of the Industry Global Business Unit at Roquette.
