Two waste management specialists and a food and beverage company intend to form a joint venture to operate a state-of-the-art recycling facility for plastic waste in Hong Kong. The plant is expected to be able to process post-consumer PET beverage bottles and HDPE personal care bottles.
ALBA Group Asia, a subsidiary of Germany-based recycling specialist ALBA, China-based Baguio Waste Management & Recycling, and Hong Kong-based Swire Beverages Holdings will be forming the JV.
The facility is expected to built within Hong Kongs EcoPark , located in Tuen Mun, on west side of Hong Kong, and to be operational by the third quarter of 2020. Baguio was approved as a tenant at the EcoPark in late 2017.
The JV has been designed to combine the strengths of Baguios domestic collection network in Hong Kong with ALBAs (@ALBAGroup) recycling technology experience and Swire Beverages marketing and advertising reach in the Hong Kong beverage market.
According to the companies involved in the JV, the facility will consist of a common near infra-red sorting facility and two production lines, one for food-grade PET flake, the other for HDPE pellets.
The facility is intended to be Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Gold certified and to be designed using the latest wastewater management, solar water and photovoltaic power capture techniques.
Hong Kong is not the only place to be getting a new PET recycling plant. The Netherlands is due to a PET recycling facility soon. Ioniqa, a clean-tech spinoff from the Eindhoven University of Technology(@TUeindhoven) recently announced that it had completed a 12 million funding round to build commercial plant in Geleen, the Netherlands
Ioniqa has developed an upcycling process for the infinite use of PET plastic materials. In a statement, it said that it planned to recycle 10,000 tonnes of PET per year at the facility. The funding is provided by the Netherlands Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy, Nationaal Groenfounds, the Coca-Cola Company and Ioniqas shareholders.
